Abortion Drugs Market to Witness Robust Growth Due to Increasing Abortion Cases
Abortion drugs, also known as a medical abortion, are drugs used to end an early pregnancy. Abortion drugs, such as misoprostol and mifepristone, are a safe and effective way to terminate pregnancy. Abortion drugs have many benefits, for women who have chosen this method to terminate their pregnancy. However, it has some drawbacks, it could be life-threatening, as well as there is a high risk of death due to complications during the procedure. The abortion drugs market growth is mainly driven to the increasing approval of drugs for the termination of pregnancy and increasing abortion cases worldwide.
In April 2019, GenBioPro, Inc. received the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for generic Mifeprex. This approval reflects FDA’s determination that Mifepristone 200 mg is therapeutically equivalent to Mifeprex and can be safely substituted for Mifeprex. Mifeprex is indicated for the termination of pregnancy through 70 days gestation. Whereas, Mifepristone was approved for abortion by the FDA in September 2000. It is legal and available in all 50 states of the United States. However, FDA has approved misoprostol only for the prevention and treatment of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and at high risk for ulceration.
Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a single dose of 200mg of oral mifepristone followed by misoprostol 800 mg by either buccal, vaginal, or sublingual route. The success rate of this recommended combination is 96.6%, through 10 weeks pregnancy. In contrast to provider-administered abortion drugs, self-administered abortion drugs are also available, where women take abortion drugs without medical supervision. Self-administered abortion drugs may be as effective as provider-administered drugs but the safety aspects remain uncertain. Thus, with increasing awareness among women about abortion drugs, the demand for abortion drugs is also increasing, driving the abortion drugs market growth.
However, high cost of mifepristone and side effects associated with mifepristone, such as high fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and severe pelvic pain are some major factors restraining the abortion drugs market growth. For instance, cost of mifepristone in the U.S. is US$ 83.33 for every 200 mg tablet. Moreover, a woman should not take Mifeprex if it has been more than 70 days since the first day of her last menstrual period, has problems with the adrenal glands, or has an ectopic pregnancy. This in turn is expected to hamper the abortion drugs market growth.
