Surgical or "cubic" masks look much like conventional disposable respirators, except for the fact that they have a chin-type strap instead of a mouthpiece. The mask is essentially a face shield that fits over the nose and over the mouth to provide breathing resistance during operations. Unlike disposable respirators, they do not employ a valve. Instead, a plastic tube protrudes from the top of the forehead to the base of the nose, allowing airflow through the mask. This tube is also used to inflate and deflate the face shield.
