Aerial imaging, also known as aerial photography has become very popular with scientists, engineers, and investigators. It has helped to significantly reduce the cost of scientific research. The images from an aerial imaging camera can be used to study many different phenomena including surface structures, fluid flows, vegetation growth patterns, land usage, and agriculture.

One of the main uses of aerial imaging is in providing weather forecasts. When the skies are overcast with clouds and there are not sufficient observations from above to provide an accurate forecast, pilots can use the data from the camera to create rain maps. Aerial imaging can also be used to create wind maps and humidity maps which help people to decide where they should plant their gardens and other crops. Aerial images can also show the location of major roads, airports, railway stations, pipelines, and other important infrastructure. In regions such as the US, weather anomalies such as cyclones are very common, for which aerial imaging is needed to understand the situation and take precautions. For instance, according to the US National Weather Service, in 2019, there were 18 North Atlantic tropical cyclones and 21 Pacific Basin tropical cyclones in the region.

Aerial imaging can be used to monitor and protect natural resources. If there is a problem with a river or stream, images taken from an aircraft can be helpful to monitor it and see if it is flooding or drying out. They can also be used to detect illegal fishing, poaching hotspots, and drug trade hotspots. Another application of aerial imaging is when disaster strikes. When natural disasters happen, the first thing that the government will do is to look at the topography of the land to see if any disaster preparedness plans need to be put into place. When an aerial image of the land is available, it is easy to determine which routes should be taken and where supplies should be placed. Aerial images can also be used during wildlife surveys. Biologists can go onboard airplanes to take readings of temperature, moisture, and sound. They can also find out where animals or plants have been impacted.
