Disposable Respirator Market Witness Rapid Growth with the Rapid Spread of Covid-19 Worldwide
Surgical or "cubic" masks look much like conventional disposable respirators, except for the fact that they have a chin-type strap instead of a mouthpiece. The mask is essentially a face shield that fits over the nose and over the mouth to provide breathing resistance during operations. Unlike disposable respirators, they do not employ a valve. Instead, a plastic tube protrudes from the top of the forehead to the base of the nose, allowing airflow through the mask. This tube is also used to inflate and deflate the face shield.
The disposable respirator market is dominated by a large number of international players. Thus, companies are continuously developing new products in order to remain competitive. As a result, products such as anti-fog foam masks, fluid/splash resistant masks, and particulate respirators have been developed by manufacturers to cater to the needs of consumers. Manufacturers are consistently investing in research and development activities in order to upgrade existing product portfolio and develop newer technologies to mitigate safety compliances pertaining to specific products.
The emergence of Covid-19 has led to rapid growth in the disposable respirator market. Globally, as of 11:59am CEST, 30 April 2021, there have been 149,910,744 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 3,155,168 deaths, as reported to the World Health Organization.
However, the pandemic has led to acute shortage of surgical and respirator masks in the disposable respirator market. In March 2020, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that consideration can be made to use N95 respirators beyond the manufacturer-designated shelf life for care of patients with COVID-19, tuberculosis, measles, and varicella. This has led major players in the disposable respirator market to focus on increasing the production of respirators. In March 2020, 3M Company partnered with Ford Motor Company to increase the production of 3M’s powered air purifying respirators, or PAPRs to help meet a surge in demand for personal protective equipment due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Similarly, in March 2020, WPT Nonwovens, a U.S.-based manufacturer and distributor of nonwoven materials for a variety of commercial and consumer products, announced to its plans to increase production of surgical masks and N-95 respirator masks for managing the COVID 19 crisis.
A large gap in supply and demand has also given rise to sale of counterfeit masks, which hinders growth of the disposable respirator market.
