Ready to Use Therapeutic Food; Nutrient-Enriched Food Used to Treat Severe Acute Malnutrition

Ready to Use Therapeutic Food

Ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF) is nutrient-enriched food used to treat malnutrition in children. It is an energy-dense, vitamin- and mineral-enriched food that requires no preparation and is used to treat severe acute malnutrition (SAM). Ready to use therapeutic food products are prepared in factories, using approved standards and guidelines. The manufacturing process ensures that the nutrients are not destroyed during processing. They are high in vitamins and minerals and are excellent sources for energy and protein. The manufacturing of such foods is the ideal alternative for people who do not have time to prepare nutritious meals at home.

Skimmed milk is an example of ready to use therapeutic food. Although it may not fulfill all the required components of a balanced diet, it provides a number of very important nutrients including calcium, protein, iron, zinc, vitamins A, C, and E, riboflavin, folic acid, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. Research has shown that vitamins and minerals found in milk play an important role in helping severely malnourished children gain adequate weight. Skimmed milk is frequently fed to infants to ensure adequate intake of these essential nutrients.

Since many children are affected by chronic and acute conditions that lead to death, a large proportion of food products available on the market contain artificial sweeteners, colorings, preservatives, and flavoring, which are known risk factors for serious nutritional deficiencies and diseases. Every year, a large number of children die due to severe malnutrition because these foods do not meet the needs of children. For this reason, health organizations recommend the incorporation of ready to use therapeutic food products to avert child mortality.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2018, malnutrition deaths in Japan reached 1,825 or 0.17% of total deaths. The age adjusted death rate is 0.43 per 100,000 of population ranks Japan #123 in the world. Thus, with growing cases of malnutrition worldwide, the demand for ready to use therapeutic food products is also increasing.
