Tuberculosis Drugs; Taken For the Treatment of Active Tuberculosis or Tuberculosis Disease
The most common tuberculosis drugs are Pyrazinamide, Ethambutol (Myambutol), Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), and Isoniazid. Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious disease caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is spread through contact; spread when an infected person sneezes or coughs. There are two types of tuberculosis, such as latent TB and active TB. Latent TB requires only one or two types of tuberculosis drugs, while active TB requires several drugs at once, particularly if it is a drug-resistant strain. Individual with latent TB does not show symptoms, while clinical symptoms appear in a person with active TB.
Clinical symptoms of TB include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, cough, weight loss, night sweats, hemoptysis, and fever. Based on the symptoms, TB can be classified as military TB, subcutaneous TB, or pulmonary TB. Ethambutol, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and rifampicin are some of the common tuberculosis drugs that are used for the treatment of active TB. TB is highly endemic in Mexico, especially among the native Indian populations in southern Mexico and Baja California. Moreover, in 2018, around 5,429 TB cases were reported in Germany. While, in 2018, a total of 2,200 people died due to TB in Japan.
Furthermore, the Japanese municipalities offer free periodic tuberculosis vaccinations, Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine (BCG), for children under the age of one year. No TB vaccine is currently commercially approved; children are vaccinated with BCG as a part of a precaution. However, BCG has limited utility and variable efficacy in both children and adults. Many TB vaccines are in the clinical development phase; expected to hit the market soon. Currently, the only effective tuberculosis vaccine is BCG. However, the duration of treatment and the exact amount of tuberculosis drugs depend on various factors, such as overall health, age, possible drug resistance, and the location of infection in the body.
