The name 'dicamba' is short for 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid and the chemical properties of the ingredient are identical to those of its active ingredients, which are benzyl peroxide and oxalic acid, both of which have widely recognized health hazards. Because of these health hazards the EPA has banned the use of all pyrethroids including formulations containing both benzyl peroxide and the benzoic acid derivative. However, Dicamba can still be sold under the names Dianat, Banvel, Diablo, Oracle and Vanquish.

It should be noted that applying dicamba is not an instantaneous treatment and weeds can develop over a period of time. If the application schedule becomes erratic herbicides are again applied to the targeted areas. When weeds first appear they are often very small and if left uncontrolled, they may eventually grow to be very large and thick. Such drawbacks hinder growth of the Dicamba market. A great amount of caution must be used when applying this chemical to prevent any harm to people or pets. For these reasons and numerous other ones including EPA warnings and numerous reports of children becoming injured and having breathing problems after using dicamba (and related products), it is imperative that any user of dicamba avoid nearby fields that have been treated with this herbicide.

There have been several lawsuits related to dicamba attributed to dicamba include stunted growth, incomplete crop yield, and leaf discoloration. Such scenario also limits growth of Dicamba market. In addition, weeds can regenerate quickly on the treated areas, resulting in an increase in nitrogenous waste. Several lawsuits have also been filed regarding the dangers of residue, which settle into the soil and stay there for years. Various companies have decided to ditch Dicamba and discontinued its existing dicamba brand. In April 2021, Corteva Agriscience announced to exit the dicamba market.
